About Mizuho
History of Kumano Fude

Approximately 180 years ago, in the small town of Kumano, Japan, some craftsmen began making calligraphy brushes. Before long they discovered that genuine animal hair resulted in the best quality brushes. They also learned that uncut brush tips far surpassed the cut tips in both quality and workability. Although requiring mastercraftsmen to perfect the uncut tips, Kumano craftsmen emphasized and began the tradition of this uncut style and passed it down through the centuries. As brush making grew, the calligraphy brushes of Kumano remained unrivaled in quality and workmanship ever since.

In the 1970’s, Kumano brush makers began crafting make-up and nail art brushes. Their perfected brush making soon produced high quality brushes accepted and used all over the world. “Kumano, Japan” brand brushed are now recognized professionally the world over.
